about

This is the first song I wrote with Stu Nitekman. We brought it, right after we wrote it in 1966, to the late, great Tash Howard (co-writer, co-producer of the hit novelty single "Juanita Banana" in 1966), who had an office in the famed Brill Building in New York City. Tash loved it, and brought us into the studio to record this demo. He wanted us and the demo to sound like the Happenings, who had just had a huge hit with "See You in September".

lyrics

Please Don't Cry, Little Dove (lyrics by Paul Levinson, 1966)

Please don't cry, little dove
Nothing lasts forever
And so it is with love, which like
Mighty castles made of sand
now longer stand

Please don't cry, little dove
Nothing lasts forever
And so it is with love, which like
Noble kings with golden crowns
now have tumbled down

(bridge)
Oh the sweetest dreams
will someday sour
And the petals must fall
from every flower

(repeat bridge)

So, ask not why, little dove
These things have to be
and, please don't cry for love
which like, shooting stars high in the sky
sparkle once and die

(bridge)

(repeat bridge)
