about

I received a call from Murray the K (Murray Kaufman), the New York disc jockey, the day after my article "Murray the K in Nostalgia's Noose" (title provided by the editors) was published in the Village Voice on October 26, 1972 (see bonus pdf of the article). The article actually celebrated Murray's return to New York City. He offered me a job as his producer on his new NBC AM radio show, which I promptly accepted. I wrote and recorded this song a few weeks later. Murray liked it and played it on his show.

lyrics

Murray the K's Back in Town (lyrics by Paul Levinson, 1972)

Five long years of noise and static
No one else could fill his voice
But get your radio down from the attic
Hear this and rejoice:

(chorus)
Murray the K's back in town
and baby he plays all the greatest sounds
Murray the K's back in town
Come gather 'round

Feast your ears on the 50s and the 60s
Segue into love today
Gonna give your head a lift, he's
back swingin' on the soiree

(chorus)

(bridge)
Now New York City's fun again
We're out there in the sun again
Submarine racing, everyone's making out fine, just fine

(chorus)
cause Murray the K's back in town
saying 'A bey (oh) kummah zowah'
Murray the K's back in town
Come gather 'round

(chorus)
Feast your ears on the K, he's back in town
and baby he plays all the greatest sounds
Hurray the K's back in town!
Come gather 'round

(chorus)
Feast your ears on the K, he's back in town
and baby he plays all the greatest sounds
Murray the K's back in town
Come gather 'round

(chorus)
